Mechanical Engineer Manager


Job Location: Manchester, NH


Description:

PURPOSE:

Primary function of this position is to conceive, design, develop, evaluate and document of electro-acoustic, intercoms, cable assemblies, and helmet mounted military products mechanical assemblies. Identify design issues and recommend design direction, goals, and planning tasks. Review designs and models for performance, manufacturability and quality. Apply lean design and six sigma design for manufacturing concepts for plastic injection molded components, metal stampings and mechanical parts.


The Mechanical Engineering Manager shall establish direction and be accountable for site mechanical engineering development outcomes to meet Enterprise goals in accordance with related plans, policies, and procedures. Defines and implements mechanical resource deployment in conjunction with product road maps, voice of the customer input, and managerial requirements. Champions mechanical engineering standardization and continuous improvement initiatives, and shall be responsible for applicable compliance with site quality systems.


EDUCATION AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LICENSE(s):

• B.S. Mechanical Engineering

• Masters degree is a plus

• Training in supervision and leadership preferred


EXPERIENCE:

• 8+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, New Product Design and Development.

• 1-3 years of experience in supervision desired

• Experience in military programs desired

• Security clearance desired



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.

• Strong problem solving skills.

• Experience with SolidWorks CAD/FEA tools.

• Knowledge of electro-mechanical designs, plastic injection molded components, cable assemblies, and machining practices.

• Working knowledge of PCB/FPC components, construction, and layout.

• Must be familiar with design for manufacturability and transition from design to production.

• Understanding of best design practices with respect to challenging environmental requirements for military applications.

• Experience in testing to MIL-STD-810G. and other applicable test standards

• Familiar with shared data management tools such as EPDM, SharePoint, etc.

• Strong understanding of standard drawing practices and GD&T.

• Able to supervise and lead technical persons

• Able to plan and coordinate manpower assignments on multiple projects

• Able to estimate effort required to complete technical tasks

• Workforce talent evaluation, mentoring and motivation via personnel performance management techniques. Establishing and sustaining effective use, communication and review of metrics to hold staff accountable for execution of assigned tasks.

• In conjunction with program management and/or department staff, ensure necessary controls are in place to monitor development program progress and project task execution, and periodic oversight is driving effective alignment and corrective adjustments.

• Implementing and sustaining collaborative team dynamics within local engineering functions and with other location peers.

• Regular use of lessonslearned, post-mortem feedback techniques before, during and after a project to foster continuous improvement.

• Experience with MS Project desired


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develop, plan and estimate program activities related to mechanical engineering

• Participate in technical aspects of bids and proposals including conceptual design, technical proposal writing and cost estimating

• Design, document and test new products and subsystem components.

• Drive system capability forward on current and next generation products.

• Develop the best innovative solutions to enhance product portfolio.

• Direct other engineers, designers and technicians in the execution of mechanical engineering related product design and development activities.

• Review designs for improved reliability, testability, and ease of manufacture.

• Create part and assembly drawings with material specs and BOMs.

• Create 3-D models and assemblies

• Coordinate validation/testing of samples and interface with key vendors.

• Prepare and present engineering data to senior management and participate in design review meetings.

• Have overall responsibility for the mechanical design of the product.

• Support creation of test plans, testing your design under lab conditions, and engineering reports.

• Support transition of products into high volume production.

• Manage multiple projects.

• Provide engineering support in the implementation of process controls and instrumentation when involved with transition of products into the manufacturing environment.

• Integrate product design efforts with manufacturing, product assurance and logistic support functions to ensure product designs that are producible and maintainable.

• Mentor mechanical engineers and other technical disciplines in mechanical concepts

• Report regularly on project status and progress, especially noting variance from baseline projections.

• Coordinate with program managers to assign engineers and technicians to accomplish program requirements and milestones

• Review and approve timecards and vacation requests

• Participate in setting goals and evaluating performance of subordinates

• Hold regular individual and group meetings with subordinates to provide relevant information on company initiatives, personal performance, etc. and to solicit feedback

• Assist in determining staffing requirements and hiring additional personnel as needed.

• Determine training needs and arrange for appropriate training and development opportunities for engineering personnel

• Provide objective input for product development ideas to ensure appropriate alignment with staff skills, and optimize use of resource pool.

• Make effective decisions on what tasks might be best for contract or outsourcing, and involve appropriate stakeholders in these decisions.

• Collaborate effectively with other functional groups to meet annual Enterprise goals that directly correlate with engineering department execution.

• Instill, monitor and maintain professional interpersonal behaviors and engagement between staff and other departments and between Engineering staff and customers, partners and suppliers.

• Ensure that personnel management discipline, career path mentoring and acknowledgements of staff efforts by direct reports is occurring on regular basis via one-on-one performance feedback interfaces, and with Human Resources if necessary, to align two-way expectations.

• Provide input to director of engineering on department budget needs

• Schedule flexibility to support critical deadlines may be required.


POSITION SUPERVISES:

• Supervise team of approximately 4-6 mechanical engineers and designers.
